Joy Bussell

Joy combines senior corporate exeperience with executive coaching and research expertise.  Since 2006, Joy has worked extensively within the legal profession and the city, providing executive coaching and consultancy.  Joy brings to her work personal experience of both board and non-executive board roles.  With a particular interest and expertise in the retention of senior women, Joy has worked closely with the Law Society Diversity team to research barriers to progress within the profession and with a number of top law firms and banks to provide insight and strategy for improving retention and development of senior womens. 

With a continuing interest in leadership and diversity, Joy uses the latest neuroscience research understanding to support higher leadership performance through greater awareness of self and others, improved insights and decision making within organisations.


Coaching Approach

Her clients describe her style as pragmatic and challenging and comment on Joy’s ability to quickly highlight the key issues bringing clarity to complex situations and discussions. Joy combines good listening skills, with empathy and the ability to challenge effectively. Joy has a solution focused approach to coaching that builds on and develops the client’s values and goals.  

With a broad and successful commercial track record, her commercial insights enable her to work closely with executives wanting to develop their performance. The combination of Joy’s business experience and her academic grounding in both coaching, psychological theory and neuroscience gives her the understanding, tools and techniques to approach each client in the most effective and appropriate way.

Joy has particular experience and expertise in career development and coaching senior professional women through transitions. Joy carried out the first academic research project into the effectiveness of maternity coaching in retaining senior professional women. She has also delivered and published academic papers on this subject.   Joy believes that coaching high performing individuals at a time of transition is important and can empower them to re-define and attain their career goals. 

Corporate Background

Previously, Joy had spent fifteen years in Sales & Marketing in the IT and then Exhibition Industries. With direct experience of selling, marketing, project managing and launching major trade exhibitions, Joy’s leadership and focus ensured that events under her direction became highly profitable market leaders. WIth responsibility for business-to-business and generic sales & marketing campaigns for each event, Joy launched events in a wide variety of sectors including Market Research, Architecture, Information Management, IT and Risk Management. Joy operated at executive board level, as Marketing Director. She has a depth of commercial experience, which combined with her rigorous coach training provides a unique framework and foundation for her work as a coach.


Joy has a Masters in Coaching & Mentoring Practice and a B.A. in French.  Her academic research (published in 2007) focused on whether coaching does influence the retention of women.  It was the first to examine how executive coaching can support high-achieving women and address the ongoing 'brain drain' of highly qualified women. Joy is a member of the European Mentoring & Coaching Council and the Association for Coaching (AC). An accredited Executive Coach, Joy has trained and is qualified to administer a variety of psychometric tools including MBTI, NEO, the Predictive Index, Thomas DISC and Nancy Kline's Thinking Partnership.  A Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Joy has recently completed a Diploma in the Neuroscience of Leadership.


Joy works in the UK and internationally providing coaching and facilitation to a broad range of clients across many sectors including banking, legal and professional services, education, consultancy, charity and retail.  Her coaching clients range from the CEO of a major International charity to Head of Retail, senior partners of legal firms and senior officers in Investment banks.  Joy works regularly with London Busines School as a leadership coach, on both open and degree programmes, working with multi-cultural and diverse high performing teams.
